How to Make Fabric Wrapped Jewelry

This is a very interesting and unusual way to create jewelry. Fabric strips from old clothing or bed linens are used again focusing on recycling items. Strips of fabric are wrapped around a length of wire and secured with colored embroidery threads. The finished length is coiled around a pen and formed into a cone or lozenge shape. You can make these any size you want. The smaller ones make great earrings and the medium sized ones are great for brooches. These can also be made into wonderful Christmas ornaments!

Materials:

27 ½ inch of wire

Three different fabrics

Scissors

Embroidery thread, 4 colors, including metallic thread

Thick cotton thread

Beads or sequins

Needle and thread

Brooch clip fastening

Clip or fish hook earring findings

Basic Method:

1. Cut the fabric strips ½ in wide and the same length as the wire. Wrap three different strips round the wire using embroidery thread. Continue winding with the thread in random patches. Near the end of the wire, add a loop of thick cotton thread facing the end and continue wrapping the embroidery thread over the loop. Thread the end of the embroidery thread into the loop with one hand and with the other hand pull the two ends of the loop to the left until the thread end is tied off.

2. Wrap other colored embroidery threads in patches along the entire length. Now you can be creative and add a string of beads or sequins.

3. Continue wrapping the metallic thread round one end and then bend the end back on itself. Finish wrapping with metallic thread and finish the ends as described in step 1.

4. Now wrap the finished length around a pen or pencil shaping it into a spiral.

5. Take the pen out of the coil and now you can sculpt it into a cone shape for a brooch or lozenge shape for the earrings. Stitch the fabric coils securely together. You can sew the brooch clip on back or stitch the earring findings to one end of the lozenge shape. If you would like to make Christmas ornaments then just make a small loop and stitch at the top of each shape.

Start Collecting - Vintage Trifari Costume Jewelry - Part II

Let's look at some characteristics of Trifari costume jewelry from the 1930s to the '50s.

From 1937 to at least the 1950s, Trifari's premier designer was Alfred Phillipe. Popular brooch designs were geometric, florals, leaves and berries, animals and people. Colored and clear rhinestones were set in intricate patterns, or combined with pastel colored plastic inserts in the shape of flowers. Many are signed "KTF". Watch for age-darkened rhinestones, a common flaw on these early pieces.

The 1940s saw Joseph Wuyts' designs join Alfred Philippe. Florals were still very popular, in addition to birds, fish, hearts, and figures. Brooches featured colorful enameled flowers and sparkling rhinestones. Poured glass was another method used to depict flowers. Pave rhinestones (an all-over pattern rhinestones very close together) combined with red or black enamel were commonly found features on jewelry from the early 1940s.

During the War years, Sterling Silver was used in costume jewelry, as other metals were needed for the war effort. "Jelly Belly" jewelry made its appearance in 1943. These were clear lucite "bellies" that formed the bodies of animal, fish and bird figures. Authentic jelly belly pieces are very collectible, but be aware that some jelly belly jewelry has been reproduced.

The late 1940s saw more abstract designs, with florals and bird designs still popular. More jelly bellies and lots of pave rhinestones were featured. A 1949 Poodle brooch with a green jelly belly is very popular with collectors.

In the 1950s designs became even more abstract, and flowers, leaves, bows, hearts and animals in rhinestones, plastic, and jelly bellies were very popular. White plastic motifs such as apples, pears and flowers set in gold-tone metal were very desirable, as well as multi-colored rhinestone brooches and earrings.

In the 1950s charm bracelets became popular, and Trifari produced charms of the signs of the Zodiac. These charms sold for $5.00! I would have had to baby-sit for 10 hours to earn enough for one, plus another 4 hours for the bracelet!

Necklaces of gold tone with clear and colored rhinestones were featured in the 1950s, and flower-and-leaf designs were popular. The late '50s saw plastic and enamel pieces in white and turquoise, as well as sparkling rhinestone brooches in flower, key and wreath shapes.

As you can see, there were many many designs of Trifari costume jewelry down through the years. If you're lucky enough to come across a vintage piece, examine it closely, be sure that it is indeed vintage, and be proud to add it to your collection.

Jewelry has always been a way to denote status and although wearing a lot of jewelry is deemed too effeminate for modern man, the ancient Celtic men did wear a lot but the type they wore as well as the materials they were created from depicted their rank and standing in the tribe. Jewelry created in the times of the ancient Celts was quite diverse and they focused their designs on continuous patterns.

The Celts were noted for their skills in the art of creating jewelry and in fact the quality they produced matched and at times even exceeded the quality of jewelry made by the Byzantium people. It is hard to understand how these ancient people could create such sophisticated works of beauty with the rather primitive tools they had. They were indeed master craftsmen.

Celtic men used jewelry in both a practical and decorative ways. Brooches or pins were worn in order to fasten their clothing together and they wore gold, silver or bronze in their hair so that they could keep it falling into their face. The Celtic amulet was worn by men as a good luck charm. Charms were also worn around their necks or as bracelets around their wrists. They also sported buckles. Whatever they wore was richly decorated and crafted using ancient Celtic symbols as way to depict their personal characters, social standing or as a means to ward off evil influences. The materials they crafted from were gold, silver and bronze. Gold was reserved for the most important or wealthiest of clansmen.

The jewelry crafted by the Celts can be dated in two ways; one dating goes back to the ancient Celts while the other dates back to after their conversion to Christianity.

Mens Celtic Rings

Men also wore rings. In fact most married men sported rings much the same as modern men do today but it is unknown whether the ancient wedding rings included Celtic Knots and themes which combine circles, squares, triangle, spirals or crosses like we see today.

Celtic rings are perhaps one of the most ancient forms of jewelry and carried with it a rich tradition. In ancient Celtic times a ring was considered to be the strongest symbol of marriage and they were meant to convey the others never ending love. They were also worn to symbolise the love they had for God and humanity. They consisted of beautifully weaved designs commonly known as Celtic Knots, the strands having no beginning and no end. It is commonly believed that Celtic rings date way back as far as the 1st century BC thanks in part to the advent of the Bronze Age.

The Celtic Brooch or Cloak Pin

The Celtic Brooch or Cloak Pin was worn by both men and women as the only means they had in which to fasten their clothing, in particular the cloaks they so commonly wore. The Celtic Tara brooch is considered one of the most important artefacts of the ancient Celts in existence. It stands today in the National Museum of Ireland and is a perfect example of Christian-era Irish Insular art that dates back to about 700 AD. Men of the day would have worn one that looked like this, however the symbols decorating it would have changed depending on who crafted it and who wore it. The high quality of this particular brooch and its craftsmanship is indicative of the superior skills that existed at the time and the materials it incorporates which are gold, silver, amber and glass suggest that it was made for a very high standing male and this male would have worn it as a decorative item and not for its practical use. This is evident from the fact that it was made in the pseudo-penannular style, meaning that it was not meant to hold clothing.

It is interesting to note that many Celtic brooches or cloak pins of the time contained neither pagan nor Christian motifs in their design and the Tara brooch is no different, it bears instead intricate abstract decorations which we know as Celtic Knot Work as well as images of wolves heads and dragons faces.

How to Make Cool Bracelets and Jewelry Making Instructions For a Brooch

How to make cool bracelets even if you are not so "cool"! If you have thought about a great new hobby and maybe cool bracelets have come to mind, maybe you will want to read on. Years ago I met an elderly antique dealer in upper state New York at an antique show.

I looked over her wares and fell in love with the little parts and pieces she had to make jewelry out of. Ever since then I have been making brooches, bracelets and necklaces out of these parts I purchased from her. Just the process of finding pieces and then creating an piece of art out of them is very rewarding and can put the fun and joy back into your life.

A few pointers I would like to share with you have changed the process into an easier one for me. If you can, buy a good set of jewelry tools. My first set I got at Sears and they were fine for a beginner but I needed sturdier pliers. I bought a wonderful German set and they have lasted me over 15 years. You can find these at jewelry tool websites.

The next tip is unless you can solder your pieces together you will need the proper glue. I highly endorse a glue called "GOOP" or E-6000. This is the same glue by a different brand name and it stays put for well over 20 years. I think you will probably get bored with your pieces before then, but even so you can re-glue them for another 20 years. This glue takes a little getting used to, but it is the one to use. I tried super glue...it fell apart, two part epoxy, it fell apart too.

If you like to make bracelets I would offer this tip also. It's fun to make charm bracelets and add your special pieces to it. You could solder a ring onto a piece or you could glue those special pieces onto something with a ring and then attach it to the bracelet. The rings, and this is very important, must be sturdy enough and must be closed properly. You must open the ring and slide on the charm, slide the ring through the sturdy chain bracelet and the close the ring together so that no gaps are in the ring. If you leave a gap in the ring this may snag on clothing and pull the ring apart.

If you have a nearby jeweler with a torch you could have him solder your charm creation on to the bracelet. I have another option also, you could also use a split ring. This is a ring that already overlapped and you slide your charm onto it and then slide it onto your bracelet and no gap is present to be concerned about. No soldering is needed. I hope this helped some...it is so much fun to make brooches too.

Buy a good sturdy base piece and then pile on your collection. Use a good sturdy clasp back and use the E6000 glue to secure it. So much fun.
